A healthy life-style combined with his strong faith rewarded Hugh with 96 quality years. Old age finally overtook and he peacefully passed on Saturday, August 26, 2017. Beloved husband of Doris (nee Conway) for the past 71 years. Dear father of Tom (Maureen), Karin (Robert), James (Julia) and Marg (Raymond); proud grandfather of Steve, Tim, Heather, Carolyn and Laurel Buchanan; Andrew and Graeme Buchanan; Laura, Sara (Josh) and Andre Brouillette. Brother of the late Beryl Wilcox.
Hugh was born May 19, 1921 in London, Ontario. He served with the RCAF in WW II as a Halifax Bomber pilot, flying 21 missions and returned to a career as a commercial artist. In 1946 he and Doris married and raised their family in London where they resided until they relocated to Sandhills Community in Kitchener in 2001. He was a member of Benton Street Baptist Church, Kitchener and a founding member of Glen Cairn Baptist Church, London.
Hugh will forever be remembered for his honesty, integrity, kindness, compassion, love of God, love of wife, love of family, love of life and his tremendous sense of humour.
Special thanks for the compassionate care he received during his last weeks from the home-care team, and the staff and volunteers of Innisfree House.
Visitation will be held at Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick St., Kitchener, 519-749-8467 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, August 29. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 30 at 11 a.m. at Benton Street Baptist, 90 Benton St., Kitchener followed by a reception. Interment will take place at 3 p.m. at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, 2001 Dundas St., London.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to Benton Street Baptist Church, Innisfree House or the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
