Obituary for Herbert Bertholt Kruger

Kruger, Herbert
The family of Herbert Bertholt Kruger sadly announces his death on October 7, 2017 at People Care AR Goudie, Kitchener, ON.
Herb, 87, is survived by his wife and most trusted friend of 38 years, (Jocelyn) Jockie Loomer-Kruger, treasured daughters from his first marriage, Martina (Jim) Munroe, Whitby, ON, and Jae (Andy) Shaw, Ottawa, ON, and younger brother, Erwin Al (Reta) Kruger, Comox, BC.
Also, remembering Herb with deep affection are Jockie’s daughters and son; Jennifer Bishop, Wolfville, NS, Heather (Darryll) Taylor, Truro, NS, and Robert (Madhavi) Bishop, Milton, ON. Grandchildren Cameron and Jerie Shaw, Rhea and Patrick Munroe, and Cady and Zach Bishop remember their Grandpa Kruger and Grandpa Herb in many tender ways.
Born and raised in Regina, SK, he was the son of Carl and Natalia (Sonnenberg) Kruger. His older brother Alvin predeceased him in childhood.
After earning a BA from the University of Saskatchewan and an MA from the University of Toronto, Herb carried out a 33 year-long career as a distinguished meteorologist with the Federal Government. He was a steward of our planet Earth, sounding the alarm on climate change years before many were ready to listen.
Herb was a lifetime student with a passion for the writings of John Steinbeck, the cosmos, the Prairies, the North and discussions of philosophy with other freethinkers. He was very creative and loved the arts. He was a collector and enjoyed yard sales. Playing Scrabble was a favourite pastime. He embraced nature through gardening and other outdoor activities.
A gentle man to all, he is remembered for being a caring listener, enthusiastic problem solver, and delivering puns with a soft chuckle.
In his memory, the family suggests the giving of a single blossom to a relative, friend, neighbor, or stranger. Donations in Herb’s honour may go to; The David Suzuki Foundation, The Society of Ontario Freethinkers, Heart and Stroke Foundation, or a charity of personal choice.
The family gratefully acknowledges the gentle and respectful care Herb received over the past 18 months at AR Goudie with special thanks to Dr. I Jagas. Thanks as well to the staff at Victoria Place Retirement Home. Jockie also thanks City Cabs who ferried her back and forth to the care home with much kindness.
An informal lunch reception to celebrate Herb’s life will take place at Conestoga Place, 110 Manitou Drive, Kitchener on Monday October, 16 at 11:30am.
Herb’s remains have been cremated and his ashes will be interred in Regina, SK, at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Henry Walser Funeral Home, Kitchener 519-749-8467.
