Obituary for Muradifa Yakich

Muradifa Yakich
Yakich, Muradifa

Passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 3, 2016 at Cawthra Gardens Long Term Care, Mississauga at the age of 91.

Loving mother of Alma (pre-deceased 2001), Ken, Nina (John), Mayda (Doug), and Tania (Rob). Cherished grandmother of Siovahn (Derek) and great-grandmother to Aria and Lebraya. Special 'adopted' grandmother of Milou.

Born in 1924 in Sarajevo, Bosnia, Muradifa left her home as teenager in 1943 during WWII and migrated to Canada in 1949 via Italy, Syria and Lebanon. With her husband Kemal, she crossed Canada from Halifax to Vancouver, and as far north as Kirkland Lake, settling in Peterborough in 1958, Oshawa in 1990 and finally Kitchener in 1998. She became a Baha'i in 1963, strongly believed in her faith and always found welcome from the community no matter where she lived.

Muradifa was known for her love of animals and nature, and her outstanding gardening abilities... but she was famous for her cooking. She was a master at pastry, making her own hand rolled phyllo dough for baklava and spanakopita. Everything she made was done with patience, skill and love and people could taste it. Her homemade soup even made the Peterborough Examiner. She adored travel and had an insatiable desire for adventure, having visited England, Turkey, Spain and the US on many occasions. She held lifelong friendships, some forged as early as during her escape from war torn Yugoslavia.

Muradifa was courageous and tough, fiercely independent and intensely loyal. She inspired many and was a loving and supportive Mother. She will be remembered fondly and sorely missed by many.

A funeral service in memory of Muradifa was held on Monday, January 4, 2016 at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener, 519-749-8467. Interment at Woodland Cemetery, Kitchener. The family and Baha'i Community will host a celebration of Muradifa's life this spring in Kitchener at a location/date to be announced.

As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Kitchener-Waterloo Humane Society would be appreciated by the family (cards available at the funeral home).

The family would like to thank the staff at Cawthra Gardens LTC - they are all angels and cared for Muradifa for the last 14 months. They would also like to express their deep gratitude to the Baha'i community of Kitchener for their support and guidance during her service.
