Obituary for Doreen Gretchen Israel (Spalinger)

Doreen Gretchen  Israel (Spalinger)
Israel, Doreen;
Born February 13, 1928, was called to her heavenly home on April 17, 2016 after a brief illness. She was the only child of John (died 1977) and Frieda (died 1960) Spalinger (nee Hagemann). Doreen was a lifelong resident of Kitchener-Waterloo and a longtime member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Kitchener. She is survived by her daughter Beth Schiemann (husband, Don) and her son John (wife, Debbie) along with grandchildren Michael Schiemann (wife, Pamela), Julia Loughlin (husband, Tom), Lauren Hanna (husband, Wes), and Allison Wylie (husband, Jake); also great-grandchildren Adam, Tyler and Olivia Schiemann; Anna, Emily James and Leah Loughlin; and Haley and Finley Hanna. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by Ken, her husband, of 33 years, (died 1983), her daughter, Kathy (died 1965), and her grandson, Peter Schiemann (died 2005).
She was devoted to her family. If there was a Hall of Fame for Mothers, Doreen would surely be an inductee. She fully supported Beth's music and education endeavors and followed John's hockey adventures all over Canada and in the United States. She made it a priority regardless of her health to make it to all four grandchildren's weddings in Alberta and Pennsylvania. She also made it to seven of the nine baptisms of her great-grandchildren and only failing health kept her from the last two. She couldn't visit her family over the past two years due to distance so she learned how to use SKYPE on her computer so "Oma" could see and speak with everyone. Family memories were complete when Oma was part of them.

She loved figure skating in her younger years, playing bridge with her long-time bridge club and friends, and curling with her husband for many years and traveling the world.

Doreen had a real heart for people. She was committed to serving others as she worked for the Waterloo County Children’s Aid Society and the Waterloo County Board of Education. She was school secretary at Sheppard School, Kitchener, for 17 years. She was also a founding member of the Waterloo Professional Business Women's Club (PROBUS).
Doreen was a longtime and faithful member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church and served her Lord in many areas. She taught Sunday School and was also Superintendent of Sunday School. She served on the Women’s Guild Executive and Parish Education Committee. The pastors and people of Holy Cross hold her in grateful memory for her faithful presence at the services of God’s house and the Lord’s Table. For the last while, because of her health, she was not able to attend but faithfully received the Lord’s Supper from the pastors at Holy Cross. She had a deep and abiding faith in Christ, her Lord. It was this wonderful Lord who gave her the strength she needed to sustain her through difficult and tragic events in her life.

Doreen's family will receive relatives and friends from 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 24, 2016 at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener, 519-749-8467. Visitation will continue on Monday, April 25, 2016 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church 322 East Ave. Kitchener, Ontario from 10-10:45 a.m. followed by a service at 11 a.m., Rev. Nolan Astley and Rev. Roland Syens officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. The committal will be a private family burial.

As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Holy Cross Lutheran Church - Organ Fund, Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation or The American Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family (cards available at the funeral home). Visit www.henrywalser.com for Doreen's memorial.
