Obituary for Elinor Anne Smyth (Smyth)

Elinor Anne Smyth (Smyth)
Smyth, Elinor Anne, 1936-2017
So long, Ellie. On February 20th, a long, full life came to a peaceful end in Kitchener, the city where she was born. Ellie was the youngest daughter of Harold and Helen Smyth, growing up on Lydia St with her brother Hugh and sister Maggie. She was educated at Waterloo College (now Wilfrid Laurier University). Ellie lived most of her life as a Toronto gal, teaching at Northern Secondary School. Teaching also took Ellie to a Canadian Forces Base in Germany in her early career, a time which left her with a large reserve of (sometimes hair-raising) stories and relationships that she treasured for the rest of her life.
Ellie loved to hit the road. Over the years, she traveled extensively across five continents, often with a close travel buddy or two. She was an avid photographer and leaves behind a meticulously catalogued mountain of photos from many of the world’s most beautiful spots.
Back at home, Ellie loved a good game of tennis or badminton, a round of cards, a stiff rum-and-coke, art, movies, and stage musicals with Les Miserables being the all time favourite. She loved her summers in Southampton, Ontario – especially treasuring the ones spent with Maggie and Hugh, to whose memories Ellie often turned.
Ellie leaves behind nephews Chris (Carolyn), Josh (Lauren), Nick, and Mark (Elena), niece Sarah, great-nieces Jennifer and Melanie and great-nephews Josh and Lucas. Her love of family, her sharp opinions, her competitive spirit and her marathon phone calls will be greatly missed. A memorial service for Ellie will be held in the spring with family and friends. Cremation has taken place. Donations in Ellie’s memory may be made to the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery (www.kwag.ca). Please visit www.henrywalser.com to view Elinor's memorial.
