Obituary for Greta Hahn (Trakis)

Greta Hahn (Trakis)
Hahn, Greta
With heavy hearts we announce the death of Greta Hahn at the age of 96, on Thursday, January 18, 2018. Greta was born in Kurseliai, Lithuania to Trude (nee Baltris) and Mikkelis Trakis. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her husband Rev. Dr. Ernest Hahn of 65 years; daughter Ingrid; son Ernest and daughter-in-law Martha; grandchildren Andres, Daniela and Carlos; son Ted and daughter-in-law Marion; brother-in-law David (Helen); sister-in-law Gertrud Trakis and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was the last living of her parents and siblings Mikel, Mare, Janis, Martin, Anne, Trude, Barbe, Ansas, Adam, Urte, Jurgis and Herman.

Greta grew up on the family farm in Kurseliai, was active in her church and became a grade school teacher. Her passion was basketball, her team having won bronze for Lithuania. She escaped Russian attempts to force her to become a spy and fled Russian occupation during the war. She came to Canada as a refugee in 1949 and studied nursing in Toronto. In the footsteps of a missionary uncle to India, Greta married Ernest in 1952 and departed to India. She nursed the poorest of the poor and cared for the disabled and outcaste. In 1978 they returned to Canada where, with her gift of hospitality, she opened her home to the stranger, refugee and immigrant. Gardening was her passion and she was a true Raptors and Leafs fan. Although fiercely independent, she was devoted to her family. Her simple, kind and gentle manner and especially her genuine warmth with a warm embrace will be greatly missed.

Greta's family will receive relatives and friends from 9:30 -10:45 am on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Grace Lutheran Church, 136 Margaret Avenue, Kitchener. The funeral service will take place at 11:00 am at Grace Lutheran followed by a reception in the church hall.

Interment will take place at Parkview Cemetery.

The family thanks all relatives and friends for their support, kind words and prayers. Our deep appreciation goes to Parkwood Mennonite Home for their care of our mother over the past several years.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Bethania Kids, PO Box 2140 Winchester, VA 22604-1340, (1-800-993-5179), bethaniakids.org would be appreciated by the family.
