Obituary for Helen Gray Smith (Nicholson)

Smith, Helen
It is with deep sadness that we, her family, announce Helen's passing on March 26, 2018 at Freeport Hospital in Kitchener.

Helen is the loving wife of Peter Nicol Smith and dear mother of Jim Agnew (Debby) and Deborah Corniel-Reimer (Andrew). She is the much-loved step-mom of Rebecca Montag (Dave), Sarah Smith (Joe Sosnoski), Nic Smith (Jackie) and Andrew Smith (Parnell Culhane). She loved and was so proud of her twelve grandchildren – Lennon, Madeline, Avery, Liam, Hunter, Jaden, Emma, Michelle, Olivia, Matthew, Thomas and Jessica.

Helen was born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia in 1942, the daughter of the Rev. W. C. and Jessie Anne Nicholson (nee MacDonald). She moved with her family to Pembroke, Ontario at age 15, then subsequently to Toronto, Brampton, Guelph and Kitchener.

Helen was a graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, where she was a resident organ student; the University of Guelph and the University of Toronto. She was an outstanding musician and had a passion for music and teaching. She was a church organist and choir director in Toronto and Brampton. In Guelph, she did choral work, and was music director and conductor for two productions of Royal City Music Productions. She taught Music and English at Waterloo Collegiate before retiring in 2004.

Special thanks to Dr. Koke and the medical team at Freeport Hospital for the compassionate care that they provided Helen and our family.

Anyone wishing to, could make a donation to The Alzheimer Society in Helen's honour.
