A man of infinite smiles and cheer, Dick, "Mr. Bubbles", will, for me, forever be associated with his times at the Bruce County Outdoor Edcuation Centre. As a staff member and Principal at the Centre, I was always amazed at Dick's incredible way with students. Who else could have made dishwashing so much fun? He obviously had a touch of Tom Sawyer's abilities. There was not a single student who entered the kitchen for chores that ever left without laughing and teasing Dick. He was the perfect team member to assist Marilyn. Dishes always got prcessed successfully and often the kitchen often got well cleansed with water too. The OEC kitchen was always a very happy place to be when Dick was on hand.
Dick's other side was also very much in evidence whenever he was at the Centre. He was a man with a large heart and showed both sensitivity and caring when needed. He would engage students with empathy and often share stories with them. Dick was also an incredibly adept handiman and enjoyed nothing better than attending to things that needed attention. He was a most genuine and caring man.
It was my honour to have known both Dick and Marilyn as a wonderful team, but also as fine people. I know that wherever they went, Dick would quickly find common ground and leave all he met with a smile. That was his unique gift .
Marilyn and family, my heart shares your loss. May the memories of a wonderful man, husband, father and grandfather bring healing at this time of farewell.
God bless you all,
Peter Middleton, Principal (retired)
