Mila Mulroney knew of Janet's excellence from 21 McGill days in Toronto. Mila asked Janet to come to Ottawa to be the Chef at 24 Sussex when Brian become Prime Minister.
Kevin had served Brian, Princess Margaret and Conrad Black at Winston's but Kevin didnt want to go to Ottawa. So Kitchener became their new home.
They opened in Market Street on April 29 1985 with Janet's George Brown colleague, Doyle Heise of Marble's restaurant, as a silent partner. My first meal that day at lunch was organic greens, slivers of calves livers in a maderia veal jus with spaetzlel and finished with sin cake. Dining in KW had changed forever that day.
Why should we be suprised by this pair? Kevin was a multi talented person - wine, food, flower arranging, billiards and was about to tackle golf. But it's really all about the food and fun we all had at Janet Lynn's. The memories, the celebration of the knowledge that we had one of the best places to eat in our backyard.
So distinct was the food, a person from out of town, visited the second restaurant on King street once and said, "I have had this food before at a hunt camp in the NWT". He asked for the Chef to come out to speak to him, where Janet, confirmed she was infact at the hunt camp that summer.
Kevin's nose for wine was incredible, in blind tasting was usually right.
Two perfectionist, seeking to please while making a living as business people.
Rest in peace Kevin. I/we will all miss you, but like all good multipliers you & Janet have left a legacy of culinary excellence with the numerous culinary entrepreneurs you have cultivated, including Nelson, Nikki & Javier for us to continue to enjoy their no nonsense bistro food.
