After The Funeral Arrangements

After The Funeral Arrangements

Many people are unfamiliar with the term "aftercare", at least as it relates to funeral service. In the counselling professions, aftercare involves ensuring an individual navigates times of personal transition; and it means much the same to us. Basically, our aftercare program is split into two aspects: grief support and practical assistance with estate-related issues.

AfterCare is a signature service which was developed by the Henry Walser Funeral Home. This service is provided to all our families; from those electing simple cremation, memorial services, celebrations of life and traditional full service funerals.

Getting to the Heart of LossEssential Grief Support
There is nothing quite like grief; it can turn your life upside down and leave you feeling as if you have lost your mind (and no one cares). Of course, that is simply not true; we certainly care about your mental well-being during grief and bereavement. And to prove how much we care, we have put together excellent online grief resources in our Grief Support section of our website. Not only that, should you need a referral to local grief counselor or grief support group; we can provide you with one. Henry Walser Funeral Home continues to offer ongoing support through a program called “Amongst Friends” a support program facilitated by Marny Williams. You can learn more about Marny and what we offer in the Bereavement Support Services of our website.

Getting Down to Business: Practical Assistance
Grief is only one part of all you will have to deal with after the death of a loved one; you will also find yourself having to handle all the necessary paperwork regarding their passing. From the headaches of insurance claim forms, estate settlement issues and the required filing of a final income tax return; to the completion of acknowledgement and thank you cards; you can bet the weeks and months following your loved one's passing can feel extraordinarily busy. But have no fear; we are here to assist you. We invite you to contact us with any issues or questions related to the passing of your beloved family member.

Our practical aftercare support can make a big difference in your stress level. This meeting is more than often scheduled after the service and our trained professionals review with the family the Henry Walser Funeral Home ”To Ease Your Burden Brochure”, an effective estate planning document that provides information and direction as a very critical time.  Our AfterCare Team reviews with the family the Proof of Death certificates and memorial stationary.

During this appointment, our AfterCare team helps complete applicable applications for the Canada Pension Plan for the Death Benefit (ISP1200), CPP Survivor's Pension and Child(ren's) Benefits (ISP1300) and Request for the Canada Revenue Agency to update records (RC4111). The CRA update application also cancels the Ontario Trillium Benefit and the HST/GST Rebate if these are being received.

Also the funeral home provides notice to the Canadian Income Securities Program (ISP) to cancel if applicable, the decedent’s Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and Old Age Security (OAS) Benefits. The AfterCare Team also cancels the deceased Social Insurance Number and Health Card as to prevent identity theft.

A unique service of the Henry Walser Funeral Home, the AfterCare program includes the services of Jim Kibble, the founder of Ontario Estate Consulting Solutions Inc.   Jim is a Chartered Accountant (CPA-CA) and an Estate Planning Specialist (Trust and Estate Practitioner and Certified Executor Advisor). He provides each family upon their request a one hour complimentary estate consultation. He also provides an informative seminar titled “The Six Buckets of Estate Planning and Why Most People In Ontario Should Have Two Wills”. This free seminar is provided on a monthly basis at the funeral home.
